National Scholarship advising is available to all Pitt undergraduates and alumni. As a first step towards receiving National Scholarship advising, attend a general information session held on Tuesdays at 10 AM and Thursdays at 3 PM in the Cathedral of Learning, room 1229. All opportunities listed in this newsletter require a great deal of preparation, so START EARLY.

Many of these awards are direct apply, but please let us know if you are applying.

Graduate Studies at Cambridge or Oxford Information Session

Join Pitt alum Paul Monroe, 2013 BS Electrical Engineering (Bioengineering minor), in a Q+A session about the British college system, application and visa processes, research proposals, networking, loans, and more.

Boren Scholarship & Fellowship Information Session

Boren Scholars study less-commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. national security interests. Previous language study is NOT required. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after undergraduate or graduate school. U.S. citizenship is required. Humanity in Action Information Session
Tuesday, November 10 @ 12 PM in CL 1228 REGISTER

The Humanity in Action Fellowship is for sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent graduates in all fields of study interested in an intensive five weeks in Europe in a program focused on human rights and minority issues. Also, there is the John Lewis Fellowship for four weeks in Atlanta, Georgia. U.S. citizenship is NOT required. Deadline is January 7, 2016. 

Udall Scholarship Information Session
Wednesday, November 11 @ 12 PM in CL 1228 REGISTER

The Udall Scholarship is for sophomores and juniors eligible from a variety of fields who have demonstrated a commitment to environmental issues through a combination of coursework, research, internships, jobs, or extracurricular activities. Native American or Alaskan native students are also eligible for fields related to tribal health care or tribal policy. Pitt campus deadline is February 1, 2016. 

Amgen Scholars U.S. Program Information Session
Friday, November 13 @ 12 PM in CL 1228 REGISTER

The Amgen Scholars Program is an undergraduate summer research program that offers the opportunity to engage in hands-on research experience at some of the nation's leading education institutions. Deadline for most institutions is February 1, 2016.

DAAD RISE Information Session
Monday, November 16 @ 12 PM in CL 1228 REGISTER

DAAD RISE is a summer internship program in Germany for undergraduate students in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering. No German language skills are required. Deadline is January 15, 2016.

Beinecke Scholarship Information Session
Wednesday, November 18 @ 12 PM in CL 1228 REGISTER

The Beinecke Scholarship provides juniors in the arts, humanities, and social sciences with $4,000 immediately prior to graduate school and additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Candidates must demonstrate financial need and exceptional academic promise. U.S. citizenship is required. Pitt campus deadline is January 4, 2016.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program Information Session
Wednesday, December 2 @ 12 PM in CL 1228 REGISTER

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides research/study grants or English teaching assistant grants for seniors, graduate students, and alumni to promote mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. U.S. citizenship required. Applications for the next Fulbright cycle open at the end of March 2016. Graduate students interested in the Fulbright should contact Jessica Sun (jessicasun@pitt.edu) for more information.

Truman Scholarship recognizes students with extensive community involvement and leadership backgrounds who are interested in public sector careers. Pitt can nominate four candidates for this award. See campus guidelines. Pitt campus deadline is December 1, 2015.

STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS


Critical Language Scholarship provides group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for 7-10 weeks for U.S. citizen undergrads and grad students. Deadline is November 23, 2015.

The Vira I. Heinz Program for Women in Global Leadership prepares women for tomorrow's global challenges by offering a unique opportunity that combines international experiences, leadership development, and community service. The Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs provides summer study abroad scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students to have an in-depth immersion in another culture for at least five weeks. Information session attendance is mandatory. Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, Prize in Ethics Essay Contest is open to all undergraduate full-time juniors or seniors studying in the United States for exceptional essays that question and analyze the urgent ethical issues that confront students. Deadline is December 14, 2015.

Rangel (Charles B.) International Affairs Graduate Fellowship provides funding for graduate programs in international affairs for students committed to a career in the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service. There is also the six-week Summer Enrichment Program, which provides undergraduates with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs. Students with financial need and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service are encouraged to apply. Deadline is January 13, 2016 for the Graduate Fellowship and February 3, 2016 for the Summer Enrichment Program.

Pickering (Thomas R.) Foreign Affairs Fellowship provides academic and professional preparation for outstanding students interested in entering the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service. Students with financial need and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service are encouraged to apply. Deadline is early January 15, 2016.

Payne (Donald M.) International Development Fellowship Program provides funding for graduate school, internships, and professional development activities for students interested in careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Students with financial need and members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service are encouraged to apply. Deadline is January 19, 2016.

Huntington (Samuel) Public Service Award provides a $10,000 stipend for graduating seniors to pursue one year of meaningful public service anywhere in the world, before student proceeds onto graduate school or a career of public service. Deadline is January 19, 2016.

STEM SCHOLARSHIPS:Undergraduate & Post Bac 


Goldwater Scholarship is open to sophomores and juniors preparing for a research career in science, mathematics, or engineering. Pitt can only nominate four candidates for this award. See campus guidelines. Pitt campus deadline is December 1, 2015.

Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship is for women studying computer science, computer engineering, informatics, or a closely related technical field and maintaining an excellent academic record. Deadline is December 1, 2015.

SMART (Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation) Defense Education Program provides education expenses for students pursuing graduate degrees related to the Department of Defense, with subsequent job placement in civilian laboratories upon graduation. Deadline is December 1, 2015.
 

NDSEG (National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate) Fellowship provides three years of support to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in a discipline relevant to an area of DoD. Deadline is December 18, 2015.

DOE Scholars Program offers unique opportunities that introduce students or post-graduates to the agency’s mission and operations. Deadline is December 15, 2015.

Whitaker International Fellows Program funds one year of graduate study or research in biomedical engineering or bioengineering fields in diverse regions of the world. Deadline is January 19, 2016.

HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIPS:Undergraduate & Post Bac

Candidates must demonstrate financial need and exceptional academic promise. U.S. citizenship is required. Pitt campus deadline is January 4, 2016.

Ertegun (Mica and Ahmet) Graduate Scholarship Programme in the Humanities funds graduate studies in the humanities at Oxford in a unique setting that fosters dialogue across academic disciplines, cultures, and generations. Deadline is January 8, 2016 for Philosophy and January 22, 2016 for all other subjects.

De Karman (Josephine) Fellowship provides $14,000 for undergraduate students entering their senior year. Fellowships are open to students in any discipline, but special consideration will be given to applicants in the humanities. Deadline is January 31, 2016.

Community-Based Research Fellowship supports undergraduate research-based service learning. The spring fellowship awards a stipend of $800. Applications are due on November 13, 2015.

UHC Scholarship Program provides $2,000 in tuition support to juniors, seniors, or fifth-year students with a 3.5 GPA, involvement with the UHC, and no previous record of merit scholarships from Pitt's OAFA. Applications are due in mid-January (see website for details).
