Gershom Gorenberg is the author of The Accidental Empire: Israel and the Birth of the Settlements, 1967-1977. Based on previously unpublished documents, The Accidental Empire sheds new light on Israel’s post-1967 history and Israel-U.S. relations. A senior correspondent for The American Prospect, Gorenberg has also written for The Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, The New York Review of Books, Foreign Policy, Mother Jones, The Jerusalem Report, The New Republic, and in Hebrew for Ha’aretz. He lives in Jerusalem and blogs at SouthJerusalem.com.

The Global Studies Center is pleased to announce the competition for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships for the University of Pittsburgh 2011-12 Academic Year. The FLAS Fellowship is a prestigious award that enables the recipient to devote full time to undergraduate study. The Global Studies Center will award three undergraduate fellowships for the academic year. FLAS-eligible languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Hebrew, Persian (Farsi), Portuguese, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. The application deadline is March 1, 2011.

ETHEL M. HALPERN AWARD IN JEWISH STUDIES
for Undergraduate Jewish Studies students at the University of Pittsburgh
funded by the Ethel M. Halpern Endowed Fund for Students.
APPLICATIONS DUE: Monday February 14, 2011, 4 pm.
Undergraduate students are invited to apply for funding for any of the following purposes:
• travel or living expenses associated with a study abroad experience involving Jewish studies;
• travel or living expenses associated with participation in a summer language program in Hebrew, Yiddish, or another language relevant to Jewish studies;
• travel or living expenses associated with participation in an unpaid internship program connected to Jewish studies;
• travel expenses related to other study or research in Jewish studies;
• purchase of books or other materials related to research in Jewish studies.
Awards of up to $1000 each will be made for projects in the Summer of 2011 or during Academic Year 2011-2012.
Halpern Awards may be held in conjunction with other University and external funding in cases where the project costs exceed $1000.
The following application materials must be received in the Jewish Studies office, 2604 Cathedral of Learning, by 4 pm, Monday February 14:
• a statement of purpose explaining the proposed activities and how the activities will further the student’s undergraduate studies;
• a budget of anticipated expenses, including a list of other aid applied for, and a statement of the amount (up to $1000) requested from the Halpern Fund
• an official transcript from Pitt and any previous undergraduate institutions;
• a letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the student’s work in Jewish Studies
Eligibility:
• Full-time undergraduates in the School of Arts and Sciences
• Have completed or be currently enrolled in at least one Jewish studies class (including Hebrew language) at the University of Pittsburgh

Auschwitz Jewish Center Program for Students
The Auschwitz Jewish Center Program for Students Abroad is a 4 to 5-day program in Poland that provides a scholarly learning environment through = which students can engage intensively with the history of the Holocaust = and Jewish life in Poland. Participants will visit Krakow and Oscweim, work with scholars, take in-depth tours of Auschwitz-Birkenau, hear testimony, and engage in meaningful discussion. Students will learn about the history of the Holocaust and of Auschwitz in ways that they cannot through independent visits and will be able to incorporate the lessons they learn into their academic, personal, and = professional lives in a significant way.
An eligible candidate is matriculated in an undergraduate or graduate = program and is engaged in study abroad. Applicants are required to submit academic transcripts and references. The application can be found
